The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a home building/repair project founded in 1969 by “Tex” Evans who matched energetic high schoolers and their adult leaders with families below the poverty line in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee in need of home repair.

ASP first started over 35 years ago with only 50 volunteers who worked on 4 homes. Since then over 200,000 people from all over the US have worked in Appalachia to repair existing homes and build new ones. It is anticipated that this summer alone, over 14,000 volunteers will spend a week working for low-income families in rural Appalachia.

ASP is a non-profit organization supported by donations and the fees it charges to the volunteers who come to Appalachia each year.

Each year, the church sends two groups of volunteers to Appalachia. One group is the Youth team and the other is the Adult team. The 2006 Youth Mission Team was comprised of 53 youth and adult leader volunteers. The team travelled in July to Harlan County, Kentucky.

Volunteers in Action

This is a picture of two members of a work crew from ASP 04. They are mid-project, the third week on a multi-week project of building a carport roof over a trailer. This is very important for the family since their roof leaks every time it rains. This crew spent the week putting up joists and rafters.

This is a shot of everyone collecting hardware before a workday. Each morning, the ASP staff drives to the hardware store to pick up the supplies for the day. The volunteers collect their hardware and head off for the day.

A crew hard at work. This crew built a much-needed addition onto a trailer for their family.
