ASP News, May 2008
It's been a little while since the last general update on our ASP plans for the Messenger. Our youth team of 77 people (jointly sponsored with St. Luke's) is scheduled for Buchanan County, VA, during the week of July 12-20. Our adult team hasn't finalized it's application yet, but those conversations are going on now. Currently, we have 6 people and are talking about dates in October at one of ASP's 3 year-round Housing Services Centers. That group still has room for one or two more people, if you're interested in spending an autumn week doing home repairs for people who can really use them.
The combined groups have a total budget this year of $48,500. We've done a wide variety of fundraisers over the last few months (and hope you've been able to participate in some!), but still have a ways to go. As of this writing, we still need to raise about $19,000, and we have a number of events (see elsewhere on this page) planned to try to close the gap. The money covers all expenses of the trip, including not only construction materials and supplies, but also van rental, gas, lodging, and food. In the last couple of years, we have offered people the opportunity to directly sponsor the trip by paying the cost of gas for our van fleet for some number of miles. This year, we're expanding that. We have printed envelopes (if you haven't seen one yet, you will!) with a list of several representative things that we might need to pay for on the trip. If you would like to support our construction ministry to Appalachia, you can do so just by checking off the items you would like to purchase, enclosing the cost, and turning the envelope in to the offering plate or the church office.
As we get into May, our youth team will begin to turn their thoughts from fundraising to training and preparing for the trip itself, so that we can be as effective as possible during our week of service, and good stewards of the funds with which we have been entrusted. We will practice by doing repairs at Camp Aldersgate. July's not that far off! We thank you for your ongoing support, and continue to be excited and proud to be the hands of this congregation in Central Appalachia.
ASP Mothers' Day Flower Sale
The ASP Adult Team will be selling mixed flower bouquets following services on Sunday, May 11. This is a chance to get something nice for your mom and support warm, safe, dry housing at the same time. Surely, your mom would approve.
ASP Car Washes
That's right, it's not a typo, there will be (barring rain) two -- from 10-1 on Saturday, May 10 and May 17, in the church parking lot. This is your chance to get all that winter road crud scrubbed off your car by our skilled, caring ASP (semi-)professionals. We'll not only wash it for you, we'll vacuum the inside as well! Remember, the "S" in ASP stands for Service! If you've been saving deposit cans and bottles, you can bring those down and we'll happily take them for you.
ASP Silent Auction (NEW TIME!)
We will be holding this year's silent auction on Sunday, May 18 and Sunday, June 1. (Yes, last month's Messenger said something different, but this is right. Trust me.) There will be bidding following services on both days, and concluding with a last chance for bids and announcement of winners at a pot-luck dinner on June 1st following the 5:30 service. Winners who are not present will be called. Items are coming in as we speak, from sports memorabilia to Red Sox tickets to vacation rentals to restaurant gift certificates. You name it, we might not have it, but we're sure to have something you'll like just as well. All proceeds support the work of our ASP mission teams, so bid early and bid often. Then, bring a dish to share on June 1 at 6:30 (ASP will provide beverages and cutlery) and we'll enjoy each others' company as the winners are announced.
If you would like to support ASP by donating something to the auction, we'd love to have it. We're striving to move the auction a little higher end than it's been in the past, so please keep closet cleanouts to the Rummage Sale. But if you have an interesting unique item or service you would be willing to provide, we'd like to put it up for bids. Please contact Sam Docknevich (508-435-0457), and he'll make the arrangements
ASP Rock-a-Thon
Those of you who have been paying attention know that the ASP Rock-a-Thon was actually in February. We had a great time with 30 rockers rocking the day and night away. Preliminary totals show us with over $10,000 in pledges, which represents a new record. Much of this has already been collected, but if you still have an uncollected pledge, you should expect to hear from your rocker. If it is more convenient, pledges may also be turned in to the church office. Also, if you somehow missed our rockers looking for sponsors in the weeks prior, we would be happy to accept your pledge retroactively!
